Principal's News
Dear families,
Congratulations to Kristy Bird who has been successful in applying for a permanent position as School Business Manager.
Kristy has been able to achieve plenty in her short stay at Campbell Street so far, and I know she’s looking forward to playing a really key role for the school community into the future.
The permanent role is due to commence at the start of Term 3 and while officially she’s still the acting SBM, you might like to congratulate her on the permanent appointment next time you’re in.

Parent-teacher meetings
Teachers have been busily preparing for parent-teacher meetings as well as finalising reports and evidence of learning during the past few weeks and families are almost out of time to book in with classroom teachers.
Where you do have a booking, please do everything you can to arrive on time. Teachers will be maintaining tight schedules and will need to limit conversations to 10-minutes to allow for preparation, turn-around etc.
School uniform, hoods etc.
With the colder weather, I understand that students may be wearing additional layers to school to stay warm throughout the day.
Where possible, additional layers or items of clothing should be navy blue in keeping with the school uniform, but I understand that won’t always be possible.
Items with hoods are ok to wear at school, but students will be asked to not have ‘hoods up’ in the classroom, around the school or playground (this includes the Year 6 jumpers).
Car park etiquette
I’m aware there are still concerns within the school community about respectful and equitable use of the school carpark.
We’re working on ways to support staff and school families to use the carpark as much as possible and know some ‘outsiders’ still sometimes occupy our spaces.
We also know that it can be hugely tempting to cut corners, park in ‘no-standing’ zones etc. if you’re pushed for time, but I would ask everyone to please consider all members of the school community when you’re accessing our car park.
Traffic will flow best if everyone respects the basic rules and guidelines which will improve the overall experience, speed-up pick-ups and ensure a safer environment for students passing through the area.
Keeping everyone well
The winter months are always trickier when it comes to student and staff illness, and in recent weeks we’ve seen a number of students, teachers and other staff coming down with viruses etc.
It can be a tough balancing act when we’re trying to promote high attendance across the board, but please be mindful of the potential to spread illness if students are at school with obvious cold and flu symptoms during periods when they might be infectious.
If you’re in doubt, please err on the side of caution so we can keep as much of the school community as healthy as possible throughout the final two weeks of term.

Class New's
Kinder
In Kinder Ferguson this term, we have been looking at Tasmanian animals. Each fortnight we have had two different Tasmanian animals from the museum. Some of the animals we have had are a Tasmanian devil, an echidna, a blue-tongue lizard and a tawny frogmouth. We have been learning about many of the names of these animals in palawa kani, the language of the Tasmanian Aborigines.
We decided to create an animal hospital in our dramatic play area. Students brainstormed what we would need for an animal hospital, then set one up and created signs for the animal hospital. All the students have been helping the sick and injured animals in our class.
This term we have Rose Bain, a pre-service teacher, joining our class for four weeks. She has been observing, assisting and teaching the class. We have been very lucky to have her working with us and will miss her when she finishes up with us at the end of term.
Year 5/6B
It’s been a very busy Term 2 in 5/6M! This is what we’ve been up to in the different subjects…
English
There's been a continued focus on increasing reading fluency and reading aloud to practice this. The children have also practiced the following reading strategies to help with their comprehension during reading: ‘Activating Prior Knowledge’, ‘Predicting’, ‘Questioning’ (which included practicing the skills of skim reading and scanning to find specific information and also ‘reading between the lines’/inferring to answer questions) and ‘Self-Monitoring’.
Students have now read/written some great recounts, stories, poetry and expositions, and we are just finishing off a unit on reading/writing instructions.
Maths
After having learnt/ practiced some efficient strategies to mentally calculate the answers to real-life problems involving addition, subtraction and multiplication (and written algorithms to solve those that can’t be solved easily mentally), we are now looking at these with the more difficult operation, division. Students are also learning to apply their knowledge of length, perimeter, area, weight and capacity and mentally multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000 to convert between the units of these forms of measurement. We are also looking at transformation - how shapes can be moved in different ways (translated / slid, reflected / flipped and rotated in different directions). Learning to play Tetris will be a part of this😊
HASS
We have learnt about the history and key values that underpin our democratic government and are now learning about how the three levels of government and our voting system work. Our recent fun excursion to Parliament House was part of this.
Science
We have finished off our unit on the Great Barrier Reef (as part of learning about how the growth and survival of living things is affected by changing physical conditions) with the creation of posters to encourage people to be environmentally friendly.
We are now enjoying learning about electricity – how it’s created at the subatomic level, the different ways it can be produced and the components of electrical circuits and how they work. We’ll also look at what was used before electricity was discovered and when different concepts of electricity were discovered and by whom.

Cross Country News
On Wednesday 4th June our Interschool Cross Country team represented the school at the Division B Cross Country at Bayview Secondary College. 39 students braved the cold winter day to put in their best efforts around the tough Bayview track. All students competed with a great level of enthusiasm and determination and should be very proud of themselves. A big thankyou to parents and staff who contributed at the carnival to ensure a great day for our team.

Premier's Reading Challenge
📚 Premier’s Reading Challenge – Let’s Get Reading! 📚 Dates: 16 June – 24 August
Dear Families,
We’re thrilled to be taking part in the Tasmanian Premier’s Reading Challenge this year! This wonderful initiative runs from 16 June to 24 August and encourages students to develop a love of reading through a fun and personal challenge.
Each student will receive a reading log, bookmark, and stickers to help them track their reading journey. The challenge is not a competition—it’s all about engaging with books and discovering the joy of reading.
Why Reading Matters
Reading is one of the most important skills we can nurture in our children. It builds imagination, strengthens language and comprehension, and opens up new worlds of knowledge and creativity.
How You Can Support
- Encourage your child to read regularly—anything from novels and comics to non-fiction and audiobooks counts!
- Talk about what they’re reading and celebrate their progress.
- Help them keep track of their books using the reading log.
Let’s work together to make reading a fun and rewarding part of every child’s day.
Thank you for your support in helping our students grow as confident, curious readers
