    Principal's News

    Dear families,

Well done to students in Year 3 to Year 6 for their effort in persevering throughout the Swimming & Water Safety Program during the past fortnight. They’ve handled the change to routine and grind of daily bus trips, changes of clothes etc. really well, but I’m sure everyone will be ready to get back to ‘normal’ again next week.

Thanks must also go to our teachers and TAs who’ve attended the pool daily and to those back at school who’ve demonstrated a great deal of flexibility around changes to timetables and lesson scheduling.

Mr Ben Latham has served as teacher in charge at the pool and my thanks go to him for coordinating and managing things in and around the pool.

Finally, thanks to families who’ve supported students to participate in this vital learning experience by ensuring that bathers and towels have come to school every day and been ready to go again the next morning.

    End-of-day car parking

A number of situations have been brought to my attention that indicate some confusion around car parking near the school gates and/or the process for collecting students from the curb-side pick-up point within the school car park.

The primary focus for all staff and families must be ensuring student safety in the car park or on Campbell Street during the period of time leading up to and immediately after 2.55pm.

Two parking bays (green below) are available for pick-up in the zone supervised by teaching staff every afternoon. Teachers will ask students to wait until their car parks in one of the two available spaces to collect them.

To help ensure traffic flow, yellow lines (highlighted below) indicate ‘no parking’ zones within the school carpark.

Cars should not be left parked on these yellow lines under any circumstances.

If you’re parking on Campbell Street to collect students outside the school gate, please be mindful of existing parking restrictions and obey all signs and road markings.

This helps ensure vehicles queuing to enter the school carpark are able to do so without additional hazards or merging to consider.

    Interschool cross country

Mr Latham has made his selections following the recent cross country carnival at school and has picked a team of 46 students to attend the interschool event at Bayview Secondary College on Wednesday, June 4.

Well done to everyone in the team – your selection is evidence of the effort put in at the school carnival and of your fitness and athleticism.

While we’re on the subject of running, thanks to Miss Alexandra Klonaris for enabling Campbell Street’s participation in the recent City to Casino event.

By all reports there was a great turnout and I’m sure a great sense of Connection and achievement for everyone who was able to take part.

    Attendance

We know that Every School Day Matters, and I’d also like to reinforce that message with respect to the cumulative impact that late arrivals can have across the course of a school term or year.

Learning programs commence at 8.55am every day, so please do everything you can to make sure students are on site in time to get started alongside their peers.

If you’re facing barriers to regular attendance, please make contact with me to discuss ways the school can support you to overcome them.

    Prep

It has been a busy start to Term 2 in Prep Wishart!

In English we have been focusing on using our phonics knowledge to write sentences. We have been practising using simple punctuation such as capital letters, spaces between words and full stops.

We have also been learning about retelling stories and recounting experiences. After our excursion to see the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra performance last week, students drew and attempted to write a recount of our experience.

In Maths this term we have been focusing on partitioning numbers into smaller parts. We have been doing this through a variety of games and activities using dominos and tens frames. We have also been working on drawing and representing collections in ways that make it easy to see how many there are, for example, dice patterns.

    Year 2/3

In 2/3 we have had a very busy term so far!

We started the term off with two excursions, one to Elizabeth College to see the Wind in the Willows and the other to see the TSO perform at St Mary’s. It was great to see the students engaging with the performances and making connections to what we have been learning in the classroom and in music lessons. Thank you to the volunteers who came along to support our excursions. Here are some of the student highlights:

    Wind in the Willows:

I liked all the characters because they were so good –Molly

I liked the character Toad and the Rabbits because they had great expression – Izzy

I liked Toad and the bad guys because they were funny - Tharin

I liked everything because it was really good! – Stella

I liked all the characters, but Badger and Toad were my favourite. I liked how Toad said “boop boop” and I like how Badger tried to catch him! - Sophie

    TSO Performance:

I really liked the song Entry of Gladiators because it was encouraging - David

I liked the song The Earl King because it had words and music- Alfie

My favourite part was the Cancan and it made me feel fun an joyful inside - Dakota

I liked the March Dance. It made me cheerful! - Nusaiba

The Wobbly Wombat dance made me kind of sad and happy - Dhruvi

I really enjoyed the Wobbly Wombat Dance - Izzy

    Inquiry:

For inquiry we have been looking at how technology has changed over time. The students have been engaging with an inquiry table filled with objects from the past. The class have made predictions and connections about what each might be, how it was used and if it is still being used today. Great teamwork and inquiring 2/3!

    Community Event: City to Casino

On Sunday the 18th of May, some very courageous Campbell Street students braved the cold for the annual City to Casino Fun Run. Entering in either the 2.7km or 7km event, the students proudly demonstrated courage, perseverance and resilience as they ran through the city. Our school team grew from 24 last year, to 51 entrants- what an awesome effort! Here are some student reflections:

I love that it got me active on a Sunday morning – Stavroula

I love that it got us moving and grooving! - Jenny

It was so fun to see all my classmates and race Miss Klonaris! – Piper

My favourite part was that everyone tried there best and I got to see everyone – Jack

I enjoyed coming 17th and first out of my age group – Jean

It was great beating my dad! - Dom

I love that we got medals at the end - Sophie

I loved doing it! - Lewis

I enjoyed the end – Robbie

I entered because I knew it would be fun, and the running was my favourite bit - Molly

I liked seeing everyone from school in the race- Oliver

It was great being with my friends and running! – Ellis

I wanted to try because I have started getting into running and I wanted to see how everyone did- Moe

I wanted to run with my friends and try to beat Miss Klonaris. I have now gotten into running long distances! – Aaron

Year 5/6A, (alias 5/6 Innis Isaac)

5/6 A have had a busy start to the term with the TSO concert, swimming and general classroom learning. This term the Science focus is Electrical Energy students will be working with Ms Innis to explore these concepts. In HASS we will continue with Civics and Citizenship which will involve an excursion to the Tasmanian Parliament later in term 2. Year 6 have also been involved in some Civics and Citizenship lessons about the role of the Governor with Mr Warren. In spelling we continue to extend our learning through Word Origins Framework we started exploring in term 1.

    Word Origins.

CSPS Newsletter 2025 Word Origins By Ellis Freebody

In 5/6A we have been doing Word Origins, that’s an element of spelling we have been doing, it’s where we have a frame for all the phonemes which is the sounds so for a word that we have done tractor the sounds would be t/ r/ a/ c/ t/ o r. Then we would split our word into morphemes, so tract and or write it down and say the meaning of the morpheme, so tract means to pull and or means who does or makes. Then we write a sentence in the sentence frame, so I wrote “I rode a tractor on the weekend”.

     Your word is

    express: how many sounds

Can you put it into a sentence?

    Example

    TSO Concert By Mya Husari

On the 14th of May in 5/6II we went to St Mary’s College to watch the Tasmania Symphony Orchestra perform the songs CanCan, Power Up and The Wobbly Wombat, some colour songs and some feelings songs like angry, sick and frightened. At the end we had to do body percussions that we learnt in class with the song Power Up. But we were not the only ones who went, there were many other schools.
