Principal's News
Dear Families
Thanks to students, staff and families for the warm welcome I’ve enjoyed at Campbell Street PS this term. With my appointment here through until the end of Term 2, I’m trying to learn as many of the existing systems and process (plus faces and names) as quickly as possible and look forward to contributing in as many ways as I can while I have the chance.
I’m also looking for every opportunity I can find to work in classrooms with students to learn more about their daily experience at school.
Term 2 Priorities
As well as coordinating events including the school cross country during Week 1, various excursions, the annual Swimming & Water Safety Program, teacher moderation and much, much more, staff will continue working towards achieving key school improvement goals throughout the term.
This work will include close focus on our approach to literacy teaching and learning in line with the statewide Lifting Literacy project as well as doing everything we can as a staff group to promote student wellbeing, attendance and engagement in learning.
Structured literacy instruction via UFLI and Word Origins is happening across the school daily and I feel confident we’ll soon be reporting growth in student outcomes in line with that observed in other schools who are already further along this improvement pathway.
While we know Term 2 can sometimes see a drop in attendance due to the winter weather and increased rates of illness, I’d like to encourage everyone to focus on punctuality as much as possible – particularly with our morning literacy block in mind.

We know that Every School Day Matters, and I’d also like to reinforce that message with respect to the cumulative impact that late arrivals can have across the course of a school term or year.
Learning programs commence at 8.55am every day, so please do everything you can to make sure students are on site in time to get started alongside their peers.
If you’re facing barriers to regular attendance, please make contact with me to discuss ways the school can support you to overcome them.
Cross Country
Congratulations to all participants in last week’s school cross country carnival and thanks to Mr Ben Latham for his work in coordinating a great event.
The weather was just about perfect for cross country running and students certainly demonstrated great courage and aspiration by getting out there on the track and giving it their best shot.
I was thrilled to see and hear fantastic encouragement for all runners from student spectators and would also like to thank members of the school community who were able to make it along to support the event (and hand out the all-important icy poles at the finish line).

Swimming & Water Safety Program
During weeks three and four of term, students from Year 3 to Year 6 will be participating in the annual swimming and water safety program at Collegiate Pool.
This vital element of the school curriculum will disrupt our regular timetable and may increase student fatigue levels, and staff will be very aware of adopting a flexible approach in the classroom and around the school during the fortnight.
Information has been provided to inform families about what’s needed for the daily sessions, but please contact school admin if you have any questions.
Class News
Year 1/2
We've been working hard to show our school value of connection in 1/2 S/F.
In Week 10 of Term 1 we celebrated Harmony Week with the whole school. We connected with our 5/6 M buddies and began creating logos and emblems to signify the slogan "Everyone Belongs". Working collaboratively and creatively with our older buddies is such a fun way to build connections and we're looking forward to finish creating our logos and displaying them in the school. We were also lucky enough to dance along in the silent disco and create orange Harmony Week cookies.
We're looking forward to a productive and fulfilling term in Grade 1/2!

Year 3/4A
In Science we have been looking at the impact of natural events and human impact on habitats. We played a ‘Roo Survival’ game to investigate this. We are linking this to our History focus this term. We are asking the questions; How did the European settlement of Tasmania impact the landscape and habitats of Tasmania? And What did Tasmania’s landscape look like before colonisation? The Tasmanian Aboriginal people, the palawa, have lived in Tasmania for around 40,000 years. What was their impact on the environment in comparison to colonisation?
