CSPS Newsletter 14/3/2025
Principal's News
Dear Families,
We are now in the second half of Term 1 and lots of things are happening at school!
Athletics Carnival
We had an absolutely glorious day for our 3-6 Athletics Carnival on Friday. The keywords for the day were persistence, courage and camaraderie. Congratulations to all students who participated and gave their all. It was also great to have a very large group of family members cheering on our students and an extra treat was icy poles sold by the School Association. Thanks everyone for a great day. The final House scores were Bluegum 264, Wattle 277 and Banksia 325. The next Athletics event is the Division D Interschool Carnival, to be held on Friday 28th March

NAPLAN
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a literacy and numeracy assessment that students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 sit each year. As students progress through their school years, it is important to check how well they are learning the essential skills of reading, writing and numeracy. NAPLAN assesses the literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through the school curriculum and allows parents/carers to see how their child is progressing against national proficiency standards. NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process. It does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance, but it can provide teachers with more information about students’ educational progress.
NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through their regular school curriculum. Students sit assessments in writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The questions assess content linked to the Australian Curriculum: English and Mathematics.
Students are not expected to study for NAPLAN. You can support your child by letting them know that NAPLAN is a part of their school program and reminding them to simply do their best. If a student is absent on the day of a test, they will be given the opportunity to do a “catch-up” test.
The NAPLAN test window started on Wednesday 12 March 2025 and finishes on Monday 24 March 2025. A NAPLAN individual student report will be provided for parents later in the year.

Farewell Bu Sharman
I finish on somewhat of a sad note this week. Zoe Sharman has been a highly valued member of the CSPS staff for the last 14 years, teaching Indonesian to our students. Zoe is very well known and highly regarded for her generosity, warmth and care for each and every student who she has taught. Zoe has chosen to conclude her roles in DECYP schools and is moving on to new adventures. The Campbell Street Primary School community thank Zoe for her dedication to our students and families and wish her all the very best for future endeavours.
Class News
Prep
Prep Wishart have had a busy start to the term, with lots of learning happening in our new classroom.
We have been learning about Australian animals. We have borrowed different animal specimens from the museum and have been using these to help us draw and label the different body parts of the animals. We have also read information texts about the animals. Students have been asked to remember and share a fact about each animal that they have learned from the information texts. We are visiting Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary this week are very excited to see some of these animals in real life and learn more about them.

We will continue to focus on reading information texts and creating and writing our own facts for the remainder of the term.
We have started learning some letter sounds and are beginning to use this knowledge to read and write words and sentences.
In Maths we have been focusing on identifying, writing, counting and ordering numbers 0-20 and beyond.

Year 2/3 News
Inquiry
In 2/3 we have been looking at living things and their needs. Students have been studying the difference between a sunflower with roots and one that has been cut at the stem. They investigated how sunflowers reproduce and react to the environment around them. The class also planted beans in bags to observe their root system and have been making observations and predictions into their growth.

Bush Connections
Our first excursion of the year was Bush Connections with the 1/2 class. We set off at the beginning of the day for an adventure in the bush, walking from the school to the Domain. The students inquired, explored, played and imagined! We found living things, non-living things and some once-living things. What a great collaborative day of learning. Thank you to the volunteers who came along to support the two classes.

Year 5/6A
Welcome to 5/6 A’s first Newsletter entry for the year.
From Ms Isaac and Miss Innis
Only 6 weeks into the year and already so much has happened. Meet the Teacher, Athletics carnival, Group A assembly as well as Daily PE has begun, and year 6 students are beginning to step up as the student leaders of CSPS. We have begun the term getting to know each other and establishing class routines. In English, our focus has been on sentence structure and creative writing using literary devices. In Mathematics we have begun deepening our understanding of number especially multiplication and decimals and how these concepts are integral to all other areas of mathematics. Science has kicked off with Living Things students have some very interesting experiments happening under the guidance of Miss Innis and will be heading off to Wood Bridge Marine Discovery Centre as part of this learning sequence.
Student Reflections of the term
Science reflection 🌱
In 5/6A, in science we have been looking if changing one variable in growing peas would change the growth and healthiness of the plant. One group changed where they would place the plant, they placed the plant in the dark cupboard in the back of the room, the mantelpiece, and the sunny windowsill so far, the cupboard has grown the highest but not the healthiest. Two other groups changed what they water with, one of the groups did coconut water, Gatorade and tap water; so far, the water is growing the highest and the coconut water has grown mouldy, the other group did tap water, Monster energy drink and orange juice; so far, the water has grown the highest. Another group changed how much water is given and another group changed the different type of jar, and another group changed what they use as a base, so they used pine bark, cotton wool and soil. And we also had to write our observations down in our Miss Innis scrapbook on a worksheet we have glued in our book for 12 days not including the weekend.

Daily PE Leadership reflection ⚽🏀🥇
On Tuesday the 4th of March, was the first Daily P.E lesson. Most of the year 6’s chose to do daily P.E leading but some didn’t (which is fine). Summer. D (my partner) and I are really enjoying doing daily P.E with the preps. It’s really awesome that I finally get to be a Daily P.E leader because ever since I started Daily P.E in prep, I thought the year 6’s were super cool for being like mini teachers and now I get to be their role model and be a mini teacher, which is really awesome! This week we have made obstacle courses for the preps, and they have had lots of fun! In some of the other groups they have been doing running games, basketball skills, AFL skills, etc. It’s only been two days and I already love being a Daily P.E leader. For the year 6’s next year, I 100% recommend training to become one. Thank you for taking your time to read this! 😊

Math reflection
In maths we have been doing a lot of decimals, fractions and worded problems in groups, partners or with the whole classroom. On Mondays with Miss Innis, we have been learning a lot about decimals and place value. And with Ms Isaac we have been learning a lot about column method and area model. With Ms Isaac we also do a lot of working out in our books independently or with partners. We also do a lot of EMM and quick maths which improves our learning.
English reflection
In fluency we have been doing stuff like choral (reading all at the same time), cloze (where the teacher stops at a word, and we say it) and echo (where the teacher reads something, and we repeat it.) Also, we have reading groups, creative writing and language structures.

Literary Devices Personification
Boring sentence: I rolled out of bed and got dressed.
Personified sentence: My bed pushed me on the floor and my clothes jumped out of my wardrobe and made me put them on.
By Stavroula Kaniaros
I wake up in the morning and my phone leaps into my hands. Then my clothes stick my body. And my breakfast jumps into my mouth. Then the car drags me to school.
By Layken Thompson
Last night I tried unlocking Infected Sky in Morph World on my tablet.
The tablet called to me and jumped into my hands.
The console demanded my arms and hands play Morph World.
By Finley Darcy
In the morning, the food jumps down my throat for breakfast, then my school clothes come sprinting out of my wardrobe begging for me to put them on, so I do. After that, my drink bottle and lunchbox dive into my bag ecstatic to go to school, then my scooter comes out of my room takes me by my feet and arms and pulls me to school. Assembly Certificates
Congratulations to all students that received a Certificate for Respect in Group B on Tuesday 11th of March

School Association
The School Association would like to thank everyone for their support last week purchasing icy poles during the 3-6 Athletics Carnival. It was so pleasing to see the smiles on the kids’ faces. This was the first time we have run something like this.
Behind the scenes we have been working on a couple of things. A sushi and toastie day will be held on Thursday 27th March. Qkr! Qkr! shall close for orders on Monday 24th of March at 8:00pm. When first log in to Qkr! don't forget to change the student's profile. Is now live and posters will be up around the school. We will also be holding an Easter raffle again this year so keep an eye out for that soon.

School Association AGM
Nominations are still open for the school association committee!
The committee meets twice a term and everyone is welcome to attend at any time.
We discuss what is happening at the school and work on fundraising activities to make the school a better place and provide more resources and opportunities for all of our children.
Don’t forget it’s our AGM and 2nd meeting for the year on Tuesday 18th March from 6pm so why not come along and have a listen. At our AGM on Tuesday 18th March, we will be electing committee members for the next 2-year term.
