CSPS Newsletter 2/8/2024
Principal's News
Dear Families,
Welcome to our first Newsletter for Term 3! We have had a great start to the term, with students accessing multiple opportunities for rich learning.
NAPLAN 2024
We have received our 2024 NAPLAN results and have begun to analyse these. Our Year 3 and Year 5 students performed well in all NAPLAN tests this year, achieving higher average scores in all testing domains than the combined Tasmanian averages. Testing domains in which our students achieved on average higher that the Australian average include Year 3 Reading, Writing and Spelling and Year 5 Reading, Writing and Numeracy. Student results were on par with Australian results in all other testing domains. Of particular note in our data, 30% of Year 5 students made high “gain” in Numeracy since Year 3 and 32% of Year 3 students achieved in the top band possible for Reading. NAPLAN gives us a snapshot of student achievement at one point in time. It is encouraging this year to note the overall excellent achievement, recognising our strong focus on learning at CSPS. Teachers do use a wide range of assessment methods throughout the year to gain a full picture of student achievement and this is reflected in mid-year and end-of year Australian Curriculum reporting as well as Parent-Teacher Discussions.
Winter Sport
2024 Winter Sports Round 1! Our Year 5 & 6 students made the most of the glorious weather last week and enjoyed tough competition against Taroona Primary School in both netball and AFL. Thank you to our host school as well as to our parents who assisted with umpiring, coaching and washing gear. We are super enthused for coming games! Winter Sport is on every Wednesday afternoon in Term 3, with some “away” games and lots of “home” games. We would be very grateful for any further offers for umpiring or washing bibs/tops after the games.
Australians of the Year Tour of Honour
Last week we were excited and honoured to welcome Australian of the Year recipients to CSPS. We met Professor Georgina Long AO & Professor Richard Scolyer AO (joint 2024 Australian of the Year), Reverend James Colville AM (2024 Tas Senior Australian of the Year), Naarah (2024 Tas Young Australian of the Year) and Clair Harris (2024 Tas Local Hero). We thank our guests for sharing their stories and inspiring us with their outstanding service to our communities.
Book Week 2024
This is coming up soon! Our annual Book Week Parade will be held at 9:00am on Tuesday 20th August, on our Netball Court. All students are encouraged to dress up as a character from a book (not superhero costumes please). This year’s Children’s Book Council of Australia theme is Reading is Magic! We look forward to a magical, fun day. In conjunction with Book Week, we will also be holding a Scholastic Book Fair throughout the week, with bargain priced books for sale in our Library. Could be great Christmas gifts!

Shoes
There have been quite a few queries from parents about our “shoes off” policy. The reason for this policy is simple – MUD. Students love to play soccer, football and other sports throughout the year and their shoes become very dirty in the winter months. We don’t wish to discourage active time so we do ask that all students remove their shoes at the end of recess and lunch breaks while our oval is muddy. Shoes can stay on first thing in the morning as long as they are clean. Quite a few students have brought along slippers or other alternative footwear for inside wear.
Best wishes,
Susan Jeffery

Class News
Year 4/5
In 4/5 IL we have been talking about emotional intelligence. We have done some brainstorming as a whole class and in small groups about showing empathy to others and understanding we are all different and that is okay. We have also been discussing when it is appropriate to comment on something you may notice about other people. We watched a video which explained that anything which cannot be changed in 30 seconds or less, is not something we have any right to comment on. We have had some great conversations and will continue to share this message with others as the year continues.
Art
Grade 3-6 students investigated secondary colours and the effect of warm and cool colours throughout the term.
As part of an initiative for the Antarctic Festival, Campbell Street Primary have submitted 50 penguins creating a school rookery. These will be displayed in the ferry terminal in Macquarie Point Ferry Terminal for arrivals.
Bake Sale
On Thursday 15th of August, the Eco-Warriors team are holding a bake sale to raise funds to improve our sustainability at school, starting with buying recycling bins for classrooms. We would greatly appreciate your support by donating baked goods such as cakes, cupcakes, slices, brownies and biscuits.
The cake stall will be open from 2:45 in the courtyard. Items will be priced from 50c so make sure that you don’t miss out.
If you would like to contribute to the cake stall, please drop off your baked goods to the office on Wednesday afternoon or Thursday morning. We kindly ask that all baked goods are labelled with a list of ingredients for allergy purposes. Unfortunately, we do not have cold storage, so no cream fillings please.
Thank you in advance for your support and we look forward to seeing you at the cake stall. If you have any questions, please contact Claire Cotton on behalf of the Eco Warriors team.

School Association
We held our first meeting for this term on Tuesday night. It’s a busy term ahead for the school. Here are some key points coming from the meeting:
Planning is going on behind the scenes for our quiz night on Saturday 14th September. Posters will be out soon. Have you started getting your table sorted? The quiz masters are working hard to test your brains and allow you to kick back and enjoy the evening without the children.
There is a month to go of soccer on a Saturday. The soccer shack is continuing its wonderful fundraising for our school community. Don’t be scared to pop in and say hi to Shanan and the wonderful volunteers and why not purchase a sausage or donut or even offer to help out for a little bit.
The school is investigating other options to replace the canteen but not having much luck. The association is looking at holding a sushi day this term so keep your eyes out.
The association received sponsorship from Wilson Security as part of the soccer competition. These funds will be used to purchase new portable goals to replace the current aging goals.
Donations of prizes for end of year raffle or quiz night. Do you own a business or know someone who does who is able to donate a prize for either the raffle or quiz night? Reach out to the association and let us know.
- The School Association is a group of volunteers looking at ways to support our school and school community. Please be mindful of this and don’t be afraid to help out where you can, to share the load. Some upcoming volunteer opportunities this term are Friday 30th, Saturday 31st August and Sunday 1st September- Hobart Cup (a statewide soccer competition organised outside of the season) sushi day and Quiz night (especially RSA qualified people).

Time for a did you know fact from a parent’s question - incident forms. These are completed each time a child comes in from the playground to seek medical assistance. This ranges from scratches on fingers and knees to head knocks. Each time a medical form is completed and given to the child to provide to parents. But do not fear, most of the cases are nothing to worry about, however if it’s a head knock or serious injury you will get a phone call from the office. If you would like further clarification after finding a form please contact the office.
