CSPS Newsletter 5/7/2024
Principal's Message
Dear Families,
As we head into a 2 week break, it is a good time to reflect on all the rich experiences that our students have been fortunate to enjoy this term. It’s quite a list! Our runners have been very busy with the Champions Athletics Carnival, the State Athletics Carnival, our CSPS Cross Country, the Interschool Cross Country and Symmons Plains All Schools Cross Country. We’ve enjoyed visits from the Jack Jumpers, from Bright Sparks Electrical Safety Education, from Hobart City High School students and from Taroona High School students. Classes have had excursions to Bonorong Wildlife Park, Bush Connections, Hobart Convict Penitentiary, the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and the Waterworks and we have celebrated Walk Safely to School Day, National Simultaneous Storytime and Festival of Voices. Our School Association has supported our school this term with a Donut Fundraiser, a Disco and Soccer Shack. Our Student Representative Council has been busy organising the Rescue Cats Safe Haven Fundraiser and setting up a search for a new school motto. We have welcomed parents into school for a Parent Reading Workshop, for Term 2 Parent Teacher Discussions and for the CSPS Young Archies Exhibition. Many students are loving the commencement of a regular Tuesday canteen and our Eco Warriors have set up a recycling stations in our front foyer. Amongst all these events our Year 3-5 students participated in the annual Swimming and Water Safety Program and our regular Assemblies have been opportunities to celebrate the steady learning that goes on each day, in every classroom. No wonder we all need a holiday!
Staffing Term 3
For Term 3, Annie Eastwood will continue on extended sick leave, with Jess Thurstans continuing to cover Mondays and Tuesdays on 3/4CT and Wednesdays on 3/4MT for the entirety of Term 3. Jenny Neville has left us recently as she starts Maternity Leave and we wish her and her family all the very best. Stephanie Spillane has joined us as Quality Teaching Coach/Literacy Support Teacher.
Golden Tickets
At CSPS we have a Whole School reward system, in which we give out Golden Tickets for outstanding demonstration of our school values. This week I had the privilege of running a Golden Ticket Reward afternoon, for students who have received 3+ Golden Tickets so far this year. Well done everyone!
SRC Fundraiser – Rescue Cats Safe Haven
Thank you to everyone who contributed to our fundraiser last week for Rescue Cats Safe Haven Inc. We managed to raise a whopping $223, as well as receiving a large amount of items to be donated. Here’s just a few of the many cool cats who were prowling around Campbell Street.

Reading!
In class we have been participating in partner reading to help develop our reading fluency. Each student takes turns reading to their partner and then asking questions about the text that was read. This has also been an activity we have done with our grade 3/4 buddies. A focus has been looking at the meaning of words in context, for example the word read:
I read a book to my friend.
I like to read.
Sounds!
This term in Inquiry we have been looking at how sounds are made. Students participated in hands on experiments such as using instruments and seeing how they can change the sound they make. We learnt that sounds are made by vibrations. The class created their own instruments and performed some made up songs - what great courage! On Wednesday the 19th of June we were lucky to go on an excursion to see the TSO perform. Students connected to the concert through what they learnt in science and in Music with Miss Gray. Thank you to the parent volunteers that came along.
Year 5/6 Newsletter Item for Term 2
In 5/6 Isaac we did an experiment on chemical reactions and how certain substances can turn into different ones. What we did was we took a balloon, a bottle of water with 200mL of water in it and an Alka seltzer dissolvable tablet. We crushed the tablet and put it into a balloon. Once we had prepared these key parts of the experiment, we stretched the hole in the balloon over the top of the bottle and tipped the crushed-up tablet into the water and it began to dissolve quickly. Quite soon after, the gas rising off of the water filled the balloon and it began to expand. We redid this experiment four times each time with one extra Alka seltzer but the same amount of water. The more Alka seltzer we put in the more the balloon expanded.

Our excursion to Hobart Convict Penitentiary and Chapel
This term we went on an excursion to the Hobart Penitentiary, and we learnt about lots of diverse ways of punishment for crime, the different things that the convicts had to do each day and what people did to be put in the penitentiary. First, we went to the gallows where people would be hanged for major crimes like murder. After that we visited the solitary confinement cells where people would be put in a pitch-black room for up to 3 days at a time for reasons like disobeying an order or fighting/abuse. We visited the church area where convicts had to attend every Sunday, up to 500 convicts would be squished together on the wooden benches for around an hour. Thirdly we visited the exercise yard where convicts would be forced to march around for 1 whole hour, if they stopped marching, they would be sent to solitary confinement. We explored the Deputy Chief's house adjacent to the yard where we saw small cages where convicts would be placed for days. For the final part of our excursion, we entered the courtroom where we went through some underground tunnels dug by convicts which led to another courtroom in which we watched a projected video about different convicts and what they did.
An interesting fact we found out was that 5000 convicts were buried at the Campbell Street Primary School site which was originally the graveyard for Hobart Penitentiary.

Music - Festival of Voices
Festival of Voices, Young Tasmania Sings
Congratulations to our choir who represented our school so well in Young Tasmania Sings, as part of Festival of Voices this week. Rehearsals started at school in March and the program culminated in 2 full day rehearsals, then an evening concert on Wednesday 3 July at the Federation Concert Hall. The massed choir included students from numerous schools around Tasmania and was conducted by Dr Anthony Trecek-King who travelled all the way from Boston, USA. It was an exciting event to be part of.
Assembly Certificates
Congratulations to the students who were awarded Assembly Certificates on Tuesday 25th June 2024.
All Things School Association
As we come to the end of term 2, we thought we could recap on the year so far and to turn our focus to the events on the horizon.
Term 1 saw us fund the remaining contribution towards Lexia which was a carry over from last year. Funding for Lexia replaced that of the Reading Eggs program and will be every two years. We also ran an Easter Raffle which was well supported by family friends and staff. Behind the scenes work started on the soccer season preparations.
Term 2 saw the start of the soccer season and one of our major fundraisers the Soccer Shack. With the assistance of an increase in scheduled games the Soccer Shack has gone from strength to strength with some weeks selling around 200 sausages and 6 dozen Queens donuts. We also held a donut fundraiser, approved a funding request for more board games for the children, participated in the community lottery (tickets on sale until 25th July) and had a successful disco where the children let their hair down and had some fun.
Looking forward to term 3 and beyond. The Soccer Shack continues on a Saturday morning until the end of August, please let us know if you can help out. Work has begun on looking into holding a quiz night for the parents in September and a silent disco for the children during Term 3. We will begin writing out requests for donations to use in an end of year raffle, prizes at the quiz night and hopefully a silent auction. If you know anyone who might donate, talk with them or let us know for them be added to our list. The annual colour run will hopefully be back in term 4 too.
The second half of the year is also has major funding requests paid out with the Early Years swimming and the Growing Up program. Funds raised during the year primarily go towards these to ensure all children have the access to be safe around water and learn about relationships, protective behaviours and much more.
The School Association is a group of volunteers who are working towards providing more for our children, to ensure no one misses out, whilst holding fun activities for all. We rely on volunteers and are grateful for those who put their hand up to help out. Please let us know if you can help out, every little bit helps.
