CSPS Newsletter 12/3/2024
Principal's News
At this stage of the term, we have students well established into their new routines of the school year. There is so much focused learning happening in every classroom and students are developing their academic skills as well as their social interaction skills. Even our youngest students have started the year settled and focused.
Departmental Strategic Plan
It has been fantastic to see our department release their Strategic Plan for 2024-2030. While many people may see this as a large overarching document, I can assure you that this plan is at the core of what our staff do every day. In particular, the departmental belief statement is a strong platform for teachers to focus their work, placing students at the centre.
Vertical Assemblies
We have had two assemblies this term that have been a different structure than usual. Having the groups be vertical (Prep to Grade 6) allows a wider variety of items for audiences. For families of our younger students, it allows you to see where your students head as they progress through the school, and our older students’ families can reminisce and see the progress their child has made. It also allows for more connections to be made across the school.
Peer Reading
This week saw the beginning of Peer Reading. Older students have been trained to help students across the school in two reading sessions a week. Our tutors have been very eager to start and made great connections with their students.
NAPLAN and Early Years PAT
This week we have started the NAPLAN testing. Our year 3 and 5 students are working hard to show their best efforts. The testing looks at Reading, Writing, Language Conventions and Mathematics. Also, as part of the statewide testing our younger students are working on the PAT (Progressive Achievement Testing). These look at early literacy and numeracy skills. These assessments provide teachers with important data about where they can target learning for students and provides the school with data that allows us to strategically plan our programs for students and any trends in student results.

Class News
Kinder/Prep
In Kinder/Prep we have been learning about phonics – letters and the sounds that they make. So far we have introduced the letters s, a, t, p, i, n, m & d. While exploring the letter d and sound ‘d’ we read the book ‘The Dot’ by Peter H Reynolds and used sticky dots to create our own pictures.
Here are just a few examples of the amazing artwork the children have created using dots.
Welcome to 5/6 Isaac’s first Newsletter entry for the year.
From Ms Isaac
Only 6 weeks into the year and already so much has happened. Meet the Teacher, Athletics carnival and our first excursion. We have begun the term getting to know each other and establishing class routines. In English our focus has been on sentence structure, creative writing, visualising text and reading comprehension. In Mathematics we began deepening our understanding of number especially multiplication, fractions, and decimals and how these concepts are integral to all other areas of mathematics. Our first excursion was to Waterworks Reserve to explore how forests are managed and how they have adapted to their environment. This links into our science focus about how living thing change, adapt and evolve to survive and thrive in their environments.
Student Reflections of the term

At the Waterworks Reserve, we did lots of bush walks and had to look out for evidence of fire. The tour guide told us that we had to look out for dangerous animas such as snakes and jack jumpers. She also showed us her favourite tree in the reserve, which had one side intensely affected by a fire. We also got to try measuring the leaf litter inside a square metre that we marked with four pegs, we got to try and use a compass to test our sense of direction, and we even got to pretend that we owned some of the land and had to think of ways to prevent an extreme burnout. She told us about a day called Black Tuesday when a massive fire burned down most of the reserve. Luckily, most of the damage has reproduced and came back to life.

At the Waterworks reserve, after we went for a walk with the tour guide, we stopped for recess near a sandstone building. Everyone was curious about what was inside the building. There were some windows so we could get a look inside, but we didn’t see much because it was dark. The inside looked like a house a bunch of theories later the tour guide came over and told us the building had pipes in it and that the pipes lead the water somewhere else to eventually get filtered and get drank by the people of Hobart city!

We have been reading the book Boy Overboard for our class novel this year, the book is based on soccer and how it is a legal for girls to leave their house without a male guardian in Afghanistan. There are two main characters, Bibi and Jamal who are siblings. Bibi wants to play soccer with her brother and his friends, but she is not allowed. The task we had was to visualise a picture of either Bibi or Jamal and draw them down. We all drew what we thought either of them would look like, then we showed them at assembly.

On the 12th of March our class had an assembly, our class decided to share some of our visualisations and 200-word story. The visualisation showing a book we have been reading called Boy Overboard. For the 200-word story we were given was a picture of a big green ogre and with that picture we wrote a 200-word story about the ogre. It was very cool to hear everyone’s different story's and share it with the school.

On the 29th of February everyone from grade 3-6 had their athletics carnival. It was a lovely day, and everyone tried their best. We had lots of different races and novelty races like the 100 metre, 200 metre, 400 metre and you could also choose to run the 800 metre race. We had sack races and egg and spoon races for the grade 3s and 4s. We also had shot put and vortex for the year 5s and 6s.
